Ca Mau Shipwreck 1723-1735
Nguyên Dinh Chiên
The shipwreck in the waters of Ca Mau was first discovered by fishermen in 1998. The Ca Mau People's Committee took timely action to protect the site and notified the Ministry of Culture and Information. The excavations were successful in spite of difficulties caused by weather conditions and technical problems. A treasure that had been underneath the seas for almost three centuries was finally brought to the newly established city of Ca Mau. The precious cargo has contributed to the enrichment of the cultural legacy of Vietnam.
The Ca Mau Shipwreck 1723-1735 contains 400 richly color and 100 black and white illustrations, including many line drawings. The book was based on the report complied by the Excavations Committee together with data and records relating to the artifacts painstakingly gathered by the two provincial museums of Binh Thuan and Ca Mau from 1998-2000. The contents include 3 chapters, the archaeological excavations of Ca Mau shipwreck, the artifacts recovered from the shipwreck site, as well as the maps.
