Facing One Qiblah
Legal and Doctrinal Aspects of Sunni and Shi?ah Muslims
Karim D. Crow
The Sunni-Shi?ah schism has had a profound impact upon the Muslim mind. Muslims of opposing convictions have historically perpetuated sectarian thinking that has been the bane of the majority Sunni as well as the minority Shi?ah communities. Regarding the other as ?deviant? is an extreme manifestation of such ignorant intolerance. We are now witnessing a resurgence of uncompromising attitudes in the bloody sectarian violence being perpetrated in Pakistan and Iraq.
Underlying realities unite Muslims who all direct their prayers towards the same point on earth: the qiblah oriented towards the sacred Ka?bah in Makkah. Both Sunni and Shi?ah Muslims share Islam?s fundamental commitment to freedom of faith, political justice and social equity (?adl and qist) in order to establish good governance, promote humane values, and construct an ethical social order through opposing injustice, corruption and repression.
For Islam to play a vital part in any future world order as a coherent viable entity speaking in unison to address regional and global concerns of security and peace, Muslims must find ways to wisely address their divergence with pragmatism and above all with sincerity. This work written by two impartial Muslim scholars is a humble step towards realizing this worthy goal.
