The island nation of Sri Lanka has a rich heritage of Buddhist art that played an important role in the dissemination of Buddhism from its origin in India to countries in Southeast Asia. This volume presents the Buddhist art of Sri Lanka spanning two millennia, drawn entirely from private collections that have never been before on public view. The objects in this exhibition help us to better understand the profound truths taught be Sakyamuni Buddha over twenty-five hundred years ago and how it became manifest in exquisite works created out of bronze, wood, ivory, crystal and stone. The essays provide the historical background and stylistic development of Buddhist art of Sri Lanka in each period.
