Mekong Diaries
Vietcong Drawing and Poems from the War 1965-1975
Sherry Buchanan
The drawings, poems and letter of Vietcong artists seen for the first time here offer an astonishing visual record of the Vietnam War. Vietcong artists were graduates of the Hanoi Institute of Fine Arts created in 1925 by the French and their lyrical pencil and ink drawings and watercolors show a clear French influence. Drawing in the jungle undercover and under fire, some artists were armed only for protection, other were artist soldiers who took part in active combat. Museum director Nguyen Toan Thi and independent curators Nam Nguyen and Sherry Buchanan selected the drawings from over 2,000 images from the collection of the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Museum and from the collections of private war artists. The original text is based on encounters and interviews with the war artists in their studios throughout Vietnam. In this remarkable document, words and images bear witness to the uncensored feeling of the young liberation soldiers.
